Ethiopia is located in the Eastern Horn of Africa just west of Somalia. The country is unique amongst other African countries because it is the only country on the continent that maintained its freedom from colonial rule. The country is known for its rugged mountains, deep river valleys and wide rivers such as the Blue Nile.

Over the years, Ethiopia's communities have been challenged by drought, famine and civil war and is currently facing many issues including food insecurity, a high HIV/AIDS infection rate, deforestation and desertification.
CPAR has been active in Ethiopia since 1985, initially responding to the emergency famine relief efforts. Overtime, CPAR's programming has evolved to include long-term solutions to tackle food insecurity as well as community health and development.

Our program activities in Ethiopia are currently focused in Jarso and Debati.
CPAR-Ethiopia undertakes the following initiatives:
Disaster Preparedness - a program designed to address factors contributing to land degradation and food insecurity at the community and household level.
Income Generation - revolving loan schemes for small farmers; agricultural diversification and modern apiculture (beekeeping).
Food Security - agricultural diversification and intensification; soil and water conservation; reforestation and agroforestry; pond and irrigation development and rural infrastructure development.
Natural Resource Management - participatory land planning; agricultural extension; agroforestry and reforestation; soil and water conservation.
